To find a good rescue, make sure to look into their social media, as well as check their status with the IRS, FTB, and Attorney General’s registry (links below for quick access). Check their status on Candid. Call and ask questions, tour the facility, if there is one, if foster based ask questions about foster knowledge, and disease control. Ask about their adoption process. If they are a transport rescue or do a lot of rescue to rescue transfers make sure you ask how they perform transports.
Green Flags: Open, honest, transparent, allow you to follow your surrendered pets journey as well as any of the animals featured journey. The rescue should tell even the unpleasant parts of rescue, such as when animals were terminal and euthanasia was the best. No Guilt trips for donations. A happy loving environment that lets you feel comfortable in discussing concerns, worries, and brainstorming ideas that do not always result in owner surrendering their pet.
Red Flags: Gate keeping where animals go (they just disappear and you are expected to just accept that without any evidence). Guilt tactics to get donations. Lying to adopters/fosters/receiving rescues. A toxic nerve racking environment. Forcing owners to always surrender and never discussing other options. Mixing unaltered animals together.
Reach out to the rescue with brief information about yourself, why you feel surrendering is the right decision, then move onto the information about the animal (age, weight, breed, behavior, medical, and any concerns with them). Please always be honest when reaching out as most rescues love to help but when we are fibbed to about behavioral or medical issues it can put us in a truly heartbreaking bind.
We are still compiling this as we need permission from our partner rescues to list them on our website
Do not make this decision during a time of frustration, emotional distress, or grief, please instead reach out for aid and resources that can help you keep your friend, as a lot of time those feelings cause people to act too fast and regret decisions of surrendering.
Now for each state you will need to check your states Federal Tax Board and Attorney General, as these are links for California. The IRS is generalized and for every rescue in the USA.

Then Candid is a great website to check up on a non profit's status and much more
First, consider the decision carefully and insure that the time of turmoil is not fleeting.
If you decide to move forward with the decision join a facebook group for rehoming in your area. ALWAYS have a rehoming fee. Be sure in your post to be fully transparent on your pets behavior, medical history, and personality quirks, so that they are not setup for failure when adopted.
It is always best to make sure your pet is up to date on vaccines, and altered (look at low cost vet clinics in your area and rescues offering low cost microchipping and vaccines).
Chat with potential adopters and be thorough and have them fill out an application ( a sample application for the public to use is listed below ).
Once you feel comfortable with the adopter, do a home check, ask for references and call the references. Ask what vet they use or plan to use, and ask for the number so you can follow up.
Once you have found a person/family you feel is the best fit, draw up a contract of transfer of ownership to this person with whatever agreements you both want in the contract and have both parties sign it with a witness watching who signs it as well. Also provide all medical records to the new adopter, and be sure to change the microchip information.
We are encouraging families interested in rehoming their pets to use AdoptAPet. We can direct further on how to use that platform and how we can courtesy post from our account to help the animals noticed more! Please reach out for more information and direction on that process.
Expand your knowledge with our comprehensive PDF resources, carefully curated to support your journey. However, please remember that every animal is unique, and it's essential to consult with your veterinarian for personalized advice tailored to your furry friend's specific needs
